Self Check: Podcasting is too often an ego trip that serves nobody.
So be sure to check your motives before you start.
- WHO is it for?
- WHAT is it for?
- While you’re at it, WHY are YOU the one to give it to them?
Do you see what I’m getting at?
The REAL reason you should be podcasting is about serving the people who listen to your show. It’s THEIR needs that matter, how your content benefits THEM that you need to constantly assess.
I am NOT saying that a good podcast won’t benefit you personally… of COURSE it will.
Just like being a good person benefits you.
Just like loving other people with no thought of yourself, benefits you.
Just like serving at your local non-profit or charity benefits you.
You get to…
- stretch
- grow
- make a difference
- impact others
And all of that is good for you.
Yes, yes, yes… you can benefit financially from podcasting. Many podcasters do.
And I understand why that could be the first thing on your mind.
When I first started podcasting, I was hoping it could…
- help me pay the bills
- take off some financial pressure
- fill in the gaps budgetarily
And in time it did all that.
But my focus on that stuff HINDERED me at first.
I was focused too much on how to make money and not enough on how to serve my audience.
When you do that (like I did) it turns your audience into a commodity.
You’re using them for selfish ends.
You’re making them serve your goals rather than you serving their needs.
And that’s backward.
If you are considering podcasting because it seems cool to have a podcast… skip it. PLEASE!
Your potential audience needs your service, not your ego.
