One of the most common questions we get from those looking to start a podcast is this… HOW MUCH MONEY WILL IT COST PER MONTH?
It’s an important question that matters if you…
- Are creating a podcast as a side hustle
- Have budget constraints from your company (for business-oriented podcasts)
- Need to figure out how much funds to raise from donors or supporters
No sweat… this post will outline it for you…
COST #1: Media Hosting – $5 to $20/mo
This is the place your podcast audio “lives” on the internet.
Anyplace that needs to access that audio (think Apple, Spotify, Google, Podcast apps, etc.) has to go to this library to play it for listeners.
Typically this is an expense that will run you from $5USD to $20 USD per month.
Our Recommended Media Hosts
LIBSYN: https://libsyn.com/plans-and-pricing/
Use the code “PFT” to get a month free (this is an affiliate code)
CAPTIVATE: https://www.captivate.fm/signup?ref=pft (affiliate link)
COST #2: A website (optional, but recommended) – fees vary
Both Libsyn and Captivate provide websites for your podcast (the Captivate site is pretty slick looking)
Or, you can use website builders like WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix. You should be able to embed podcast functionality into them with no problem.
COST #3: Equipment
At the very least, you’ll need an external microphone to plug into your computer.
You can use this microphone for recording into free software like Audacity or Garage Band.
It will also come in handy when using online recording platforms that enable you to connect with guests (Squadcast – affiliate link OR Zencaster)
Depending on your needs, you may also find it helpful to have a recorder that works independent of your computer.
The BEST one that we’ve found and recommend whole-heartedly is the Zoom Podtrac P4.
That’s it! Podcasting really IS fairly inexpensive.
